John Campbell

Since the job on Timoneer finished, I have been spending more time writing and taking photographs. I am hoping to combine my love of sailing with my interests of writing and photography. Please click here to read about my Seascribe project.

In November 2008, I joined Timoneer, a 45 meter ketch built at Vitters shipyard in Holland. Unfortunately, the owner died so the job came to an end.

For the past three years I have been running the 35 meter Codecasa Laymar II. She spent the summers cruising the central and eastern Mediterranean.

Prior to that, I ran the 35 meter Perini motor-sailer, Magdalus Terzo, chartering in the Caribbean in the winter and the Mediterranean in the summer,

In the spring of 2002, I finished overseeing the build of a 40 metre Feadship at the Royal van Lent shipyard in Holland. After finishing the build and the commissioning, I sailed her as Captain for 2,000 miles in her first season. As soon as that voyage was finished, I took over the yacht Moon 'n Star and spent two summers cruising the Mediterranean and Aegean.

I have been sailing since I was eight years old. Since then I have logged some 250,000 miles at sea, but I still enjoy making new landfalls. In my travels I have made ten Atlantic crossings, including one when I crossed single-handed.

Our most interesting voyage to date was to circumnavigate South America. We were fortunate enough to cruise in the Falklands and in Patagonia, and rounded Cape Horn twice. Please go to the Books page for a list of published articles and details of the book we wrote about this voyage.

Lana and I met on board a square-rigger, sailing in the Virgin Islands. We have been married for 25 years. The name of the ship on which we met? Romance!!!!

To see my CV, and to read a little more about our sailing experiences, please follow the "sailing" link.

I enjoy writing about our experiences, and have had four books published, as well as some two hundred articles in various magazines. Lana and I both like to take photographs of our travels, and I once made three short films for TV, describing a voyage to the South Pacific, and a visit to Pitcairn Island..

My other interests include most water-sports, especially sailing, windsurfing, canoeing and rowing. I also enjoy biking and walking in the mountains, and I love driving the Caterham Se7en, which is my latest toy, and which was the car of my dreams when I was a teenager.

I have a private pilot's licence, but when there is not the opportunity to fly full-sized planes, I like to build and fly radio-controlled model planes.

I am interested in communications, and I am a reasonably active Ham operator (G4SGJ).
